Examining the Infinities

By Jordan Cote

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_forms :

"In philosophy and specifically metaphysics, the theory of Forms, theory of Ideas, Platonic idealism, or Platonic realism is a theory widely credited to the Classical Greek philosopher Plato. The theory suggests that the physical world is not as real or true as "Forms". According to this theory, Forms—conventionally capitalized and also commonly translated as "Ideas"—are the non-physical, timeless, absolute, and unchangeable essences of all things, of which objects and matter in the physical world are merely imitations."

In this theory there is supposed a special form called "Form of the Good". This treatise is meant to expound upon this form as much as possible, drawing upon several texts that are in the traditions of both Platonism and Gnostic Christianity.

The Invisible Spirit

Sethian Gnosticism and the Platonic Tradition, pp. 505, Turner J.D.:

"the Invisible Spirit is unlimited, without quantity, neither corporeal nor incorporeal, neither Great nor Small, immeasurable, neither eternal nor in time, ineffable, unnamable, invisible, unsearchable, undergoing nothing, and not anything among those things that exist"

"it is total perfection, pure Mind, life-giving life, blessedness-giving blessedness, knowledge-giving knowledge, goodness-giving goodness, mercy-giving mercy, and grace-giving grace, yet transcends all these attributes."

The Barbelo Aeon

Sethian Gnosticism and the Platonic Tradition, pp. 532, Turner J.D.:

"According to the metaphysical scheme of the Apocryphon of John (II 4, 19-32, p. 500), the unfolding of the primal unity into multiplicity occurs as a process of mental reflection by which the primal principle externalizes itself so as to avail itself both for itself and others in the form of his Pronoia or First Thought, named Barbelo."

"She is the first thought, his image. She became a first Man who is the virginal Spirit, the thrice-male, the thrice-powerful, the thrice-named, the thrice-begotten, the androgynous unaging aeon, who came forth from his Providence."

Barbelo 'became male' "because she had separated from the male (i.e., the Invisible Spirit)" (pp. 522). Barbelo is also "Knowledge of the Invisible Spirit" (pp. 583)
See also:

And there is a third: the "Triple Powered One is the preexistent otherness of the Invisible Spirit that proceeds forth to become the Aeon (of Barbelo)"

Therefore there are 'three males' of the Trinity as described in the Bible. I do not know if the Aeon (Barbelo) is destined to stay male, or to rejoin her partner and become female again, or perhaps become androgynous.

In any case, this is likely the reason the church and even Gnostic texts favor maleness over feminimity. Masculinity is, at least, better suited to situations where that entity is seeking for something and must go on its own.

The Triple Powered One

Also called Autogenes (self-generated), The 'Son', being male, descended in order to redeem or restore Sophia, who is an Aeon whos name means Wisdom, whom was emanated after several Triads had appeared, each in succession. However, this one is sometimes identified as being a lower aspect of Barbelo. See also:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zostrianos#Barbelo_Aeon:

"The Triple-Male Child is a savior or mediator in the Barbelo Aeon who brings undifferentiated beings in the Aeon of Protophanes into differentiated existence in the Aeon of Autogenes, and also helps them to ascend back to the Aeon of Protophanes."

Since the Triple-Male Child is the mediator of the two Spirits, it can be seen in the picture as the connective substance between the two, like a fiber optic cable.

The image of the Invisible Sprit is pictured here as the satellite, even as it views back to the Invisible Sprit itself.

The pre-existent One is, or has, the pre-image of Barbelo.
When the Spirit, since they are similar, it is looking at itself - it seems - it sees an image of an image, also looking back.

"Spirit beyond Spirit, for he does not breathe, but rather it is the Spirit in that which is his being, Spirit breathing towards itself so that it is Spirit, since the Spirit is not separate from itself".

The Triple-powered One serves as some kind of a limit, such that when an image is reflected in contemplation (which means to observe), the embedded image of it is different from the original, containing image, in that it has a different context (since is contained).

Each reflection is different as they are within context of the previous reflections. And according to the text, this process eventually terminates, yielding definite images with no further embedded reflections.

It seems that in this process he self-generated (Autogenes). He is known as Christ (which means annointed in Greek).

"...the universe which proceeds from him down to the ultimate limit of images."

In this way, it generates the many-fold.

Sethian Gnosticism and the Platonic Tradition, pp. 515, Turner J.D.:
"In Allogenes, the Triple-Powered One is said to be the delimiter of the boundlessness subsisting in the Invisible Spirit. As an initially un-bounded entity, the Triple-Powered One emerges from its source in the Invisible Spirit as a processing boundlessness that turns itself back to its source in an act of objectifying self-knowledge; becoming stable and bounded, it takes on form and definition as Barbelo, the self knowledge or Mind of the Invisible Spirit."

The image depicting 9 "family triads" (see page 554 of Turner). See also:

He is endowed with Blessedness and Goodness, because when he is intelligized as the Delimiter (D) of the Boundlessness (B) of the Invisible Spirit (IS) that subsists in him (D), it (B) causes him (D) to revert to it (IS) in order that it (B) might know what it is that is within it (IS) and how it (IS) exists, and that he (D) might guarantee the endurance of everything by being a cause for those who truly exist. For through him (D) knowledge of it (IS) became available, since he (D) is the one who knows what it (IS; or he, D?) is. But they brought forth nothing beyond themselves, neither power nor rank nor glory nor aeon, for they are all eternal.

The three powers

Sethian Gnosticism and the Platonic Tradition, pp. 514, Turner J.D.:
"In being there is life and intellect,
In life there is being and intellection,
In intellect there is being and living"

Sethian Gnosticism and the Platonic Tradition, pp. 529, Turner J.D.:
"at the level of the Invisible Spirit, the Being-Life-Mind triad is present as pure infinitival activity (Existing, Living, Thinking, though dominantly existing);"

"on the level of the Triple-Powered One, it is present as a triad of abstract qualities (Existence, Vitality, Mentality/Blessedness, though dominantly Vitality);"

"and probably on the level of the Barbelo Aeon, as a triad of substantial realities, (Being, Life and Mind, though dominantly Mind)."

Not only did they dwell in thought, but he made room for them, since he is Being in the following way: he set a limit upon Being, lest it become endless and formless; yet it was truly delimited while it was a new entity in order that it might become something having its own dwelling, Existence together with Being, standing with it, existing with it, surrounding it, and being like it on every side.

The three domains

Within the Barbelo 'Aeon' (eon), there are three domains.

Sethian Gnosticism and the Platonic Tradition, pp. 534, Turner J.D.:

"1. the domain of "the authentic existents" presided over by Kalyptos, the Hidden One, a sort of contemplated intellect rather like the contemplated aspect of the Plotinian Intellect;"

"2. the domain of "those who are unified" (i.e. forms and souls that "exist together" prior to differentiation or perhaps minds and ideas which are unified through intellection) presided over by Protophanes, the First Appearing One, a sort of contemplating intellect rather like the contemplating aspect of the Plotinian Intellect;"

"3. the domain of the "individuals" (differentiated souls and forms) presided over by Autogenes (the Self-begotten One) who operates to rectify the realm of Nature, rather like the Plotinian Soul in its lower manifestation as Logos or individuated souls"

I found what is possibly an analogue to the above, in the field of Metaphysics (or Ontology).  A 'Universal' is a definining characteristic or simply, a quality. There are three kinds of Universal that are descriptors used in Language.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_(metaphysics) :

"A universal may have instances, known as its particulars. For example, the type dog (or doghood) is a universal, as are the property red (or redness) and the relation betweenness (or being between). Any particular dog, red thing, or object that is between other things is not a universal, however, but is an instance of a universal. That is, a universal type (doghood), property (redness), or relation (betweenness) inheres in a particular object (a specific dog, red thing, or object between other things)."

It seems to me that each Instance of Universal describes an entity within the according one of the three domains.

Universal Type may correspond to 1. authentic existents
Because each is defined by its own category composed of a potential multitude

Universal Property may correspond to 2. those who are unified
Because each is defined in a way that goes by a shared property

Universal Relation may correspond to 3. individuals
Because each is defined in a way that is relational: according to what/who it is not

Each Universal (such as doghood, red, or between) may have in existence a living being which is, or possesses, that essential quality.
